Heat is the fastest killer in chinchilla care. The densest fur of any land mammal and no ability to sweat mean a room above 75°F (24°C) puts a chinchilla at real risk, and 80°F (27°C) and up is emergency territory, faster in humid air. The comfortable range is 60 to 70°F (15 to 21°C).
