Chinchilla cage setup

A good chinchilla cage is tall, made of metal and wood rather than plastic, and placed in the coolest room you can offer, out of direct sun. Chinchillas are climbers and chewers, so the cage needs vertical space to jump and safe things to gnaw, and nothing in it may punish the animal for chewing on it.

Setup decides half of daily care before you touch anything: a thermometer at cage height, a granite or ceramic cooling slab, a hay rack that is never empty, and wooden ledges instead of plastic shelves. These guides cover the equipment worth buying and the popular products that do not belong near a chinchilla.
